Johnny, was born in Louisiana
Not far from New Orleans
He learned to pick guitar on a box of cigars
Fitted with piano wire strings x2

Johnny, when he left the country
He hopped on a northbound train
Said “I’ll be the leader of a big ol’ band,
I'm gonna drive them city girls insane” x2

When Johnny rolled into that city
With a brand new guitar in his hand
He walked downtown, searching club after club
But Johnny, he could not find a band x2

So Johnny he asked a performer
A man with an electric keyboard,
“can you boogie woogie with a steady roll?”
he said “son, we don’t need to anymore” x2

The performer, he called out to Johnny
And turned on his machine
He said “this’ll take the place of your eight piece band,
It’ll do things you have never scene” x2

But when Johnny heard that click track
With them electronic drums
He turned from the man and away he ran
sayin' “Lord, it’s kingdom come!” x2

Johnny he set up on the corner
Singing “man ain’t nothing but a man,
But I’ve got soul in my fingers and my toes
And I’ll die with a guitar in my hands” x2
